Veeam released an early Christmas present yesterday (12/5), the very much anticipated version 12.1!
12.1 was much talked about during the most excellent Veeam 100 summit in Prague a little while ago. It is a non-breaking release, packed with enhancements and features. I’m quite surprised this is only a X.1 release, it would easily qualify for a major release.
Here are “some” of the features in 12.1:
I’m particular existed about Yara rules and improvements to SureBackup. SureBackup can now randomly test VMs, which is great for auditing purposed to document that your backups are working. In addition, SureBackup does not depend on a virtual lab anymore, which should make initial setup a lot easier.
So, let’s go to the home-lab Veeam box and update!
As always, make sure you backup your config of Veeam before. Also make sure no jobs are running, even better disable all jobs for the time being.
Head over to Veeam to load the new releases. I appreciate Veeam’s server being able to deliver fast upload speeds! I’m have 1GB fiber at my home, so this took only a few minutes.
After download, mount the iso. I currently do no have the Veeam Enterprise Manager installed, so we will only upgrade Veeam Backup&Replication
The wizard will list the components to be upgraded, including version numbers.
I previously converted my Veeam install to use PostgreSQL, so nothing to do here.
Before we upgrade the wizard will list our answers during the per-install.
And we are on our way. The wizard will tell you this might take a while. This will depend on your size of deployment and the “horsepower” of your Veeam server. In my lap this was done under 10 minutes (I’m running Desktop Info on my systems, this what shows on the right side. It’s a nice tool, you can check it out here).
And we are done.
Yep, all updated indeed!
Ok, that was way too easy and fast! Joking aside, my experience with Veeam upgrade has been very positive, I rarely run into any issues. Since this was so fast, let’s upgrade Veeam One as well!
This looks familiar!
I appreciate the consistency between the update wizards. Makes it very easy to follow.
And we are done again.
In conclusion, this was one of the easiest updates and I ran into no issues. Now comes the time do dig deeper in the new features, exploring Yara rules and features for SureBackup, as well as all the other enhancements in this release.
Thanks to the Veeam team for making my life easier with a reliable upgrade assistance!
